Bloc Party – Live @ Lollapalooza
August 9, 2008

This is the second time I’ve seen Bloc Party in a festival setting, the difference being at Austin City Limits the crowd was full of Bloc Party fans and at this show (at least up front where I was) it was full of people waiting for Radiohead and a few scattered Bloc Party fans. It seemed more people were excited about Kele’s Obama shirt than the actual music. This made it a bit more difficult for the band to get the crowd excited and moving.
Considering through the crowd issues and not having their normal bass player, though, the band still put on a pretty good show. It was a good mixture of their last two albums and their new single “Mercury. The best songs on their set, in my opinion, were the slower, atmospheric songs like “This Modern Love” and “So Here We Are” which both showcased Bloc Party’s fantastic instrumentation (the drummer is always fun to watch) and huge-sounding climaxes. If nothing more, it was a good warm-up for Radiohead.
