Walk The Line: Extended Cut DVD Giveaway!

Date March 19, 2008

If you couldn’t tell by the post title, I’m giving away free copies of the new Walk the Line: Extended Cut DVD, which will be shipped straight to your address. The DVD has a crapload of special features/documentaries/deleted scenes/commentaries, so if you’re as big of a fan of this film as I am, it’s safe to say that you’re going to want to get your hands on one of these. I’m giving away THREE copies so you’re chances of getting one is pretty good.

How To Enter:

To enter all you have to do is tell me which artist/band you would like see portrayed in a biopic. I’ll pick my three favorites to be the winners. You can also choose the actor/actress that you would like to play them, but it’s not required (it might help your chances though!). Leave entries in the comments and make sure to leave your email address with me so I can get in touch with you if you win. The contest will be over on March 26th. Shortly afterwards, I’ll mail out your prizes (unfortunately this means I can’t allow entries from outside the U.S.). Sounds easy enough right?

Here’s a couple of my favorite Cash tunes:

MP3 Johnny Cash – Ring of Fire
MP3 Johnny Cash – One (U2 Cover)

I’d love to see a biopic of Bono or U2. As for someone who could play Bono….Hmmmm…I don’t know, he’s such an interesting guy and it would be difficult to see anyone else “play” him. Colin Farrell comes directly to mind, mostly because they most have that I’m-Irish-and-I-take-no-shit-from-no-one kind of vibe.

I just had to finally comment on this one.

A David Bowie biopic. Starring Toni Collette. Because that’s the kind of surreality it should have.

Elliott Smith, played by Christian Bale

Yes, indeed. That is my choice. Complete, dramatic life story, from beginning to end.

Or Broken Social Scene…Or Cloud Cult…Or SUFJAN.

Tom Waits… played by… Lyle Lovett, maybe?

Preferably during his hilarious drunken years.

Definitely, definitely Marvin Gaye. He had such a tumultuous lifetime, but in his later years, his public persona was 100% pure sex in human form. It’d be wayyy interesting to do a biopic of his life.

I’m going for entertainment value and would like to see Kool and the Gang bio. Mostly because they sing Joanna and that’s my baby girl’s name. And they were the first ever concert I ever experienced. I think JT still looks young enough to play himself, if not, Terrence Howard with contacts. :)

how about Woody Guthrie by Johnny Depp, or someone else that I can’t think of right now…

I heard Control was really good, as far as Ian Curtis biopics go. Anton Corbijn directed it.

Good responses so far, this is going to be hard to choose. Keep them coming!

Jimi Hendrix as played by Andre 3000 (did I make it up that this was a rumor at some point?)
Robert Johnson as played by Jaime Foxx
Marvin Gaye as played by Don Cheadle

The story of Jeff Magnum and Neutral Milk Hotel. I don’t really know actors, so someone can feel free to suggest someone.

I was going to say Nick Drake, but someone beat me to it.

Easy…Freddie Mercury of Queen. Such an incredible life and background (Indian descent, born on Zanzibar, lived most of his life in Britain, talk about cool scenery!).

I have no idea who’d play him.

I’m going to go with Run DMC. either that or Aerosmith, those ought to be interesting biopics…

    Wendy O. Williams

John Fahey, played by Kevin Spacey. M. Ward in charge of the soundtrack and making a cameo appearance.

Michael Jackson. An American tragedy: from the heights of fame to the depths of shame. Perhaps with different actors portraying the Gloved One at various periods in his reconstructive surgery/musical genre/hype to crash life, a la the recent Dylan biopic?

How about David Bowie played by Jemaine Clement?

Without a doubt the only choice can be the Tim Kasher biopic, So-So Gigolo.

It would start with playing in low scale venues in omaha with now obscure bands eventually joining cursive. It would all be fun staying out and sleeping in and getting drunk with his friends until he gets married and moves to portland. This would be the first moody, dramatic part of the movie. Tim’s working on a divorce and a healthy drinking habit. Plus he really misses Cursive. He eventually wises up, gets a divorce and oh no! a lung infection. eeps! (second emotional part! he beats death and learns to appreciate his bandmates and fans). third dramatic cliffhanger comes from rob nansel deciding to not release the first good life album on saddle creek and tim having to settle with better looking records. He think about giving it all up, but then is inspired by a child with cancer or something.

the movie would climax with their memorable july 2006 gig at the canopy club in champaign (you see because I was there)

required in this biopic would be the line “I’m Tim fucking Kasher” and someone asking Tim as a waiter “Why must you shit where you eat?” replied with “cause I’m ‘the martyr’”

Also most of it would take place in a bar.

the actor doesn’t matter. The boldness that is tim kasher’s essence will command the audience, actor, and even the cameras. It won’t be a movie, it will be a religious experience.

I mean… I’m only a casual listener of his music at best… but I don’t think anyone can really deny that Bob Marley has the story and the fan base appreciation to warrant a biopic. He’s got a good group of sons that would be the logical choice to portray him… (although somebody like Zach de la Rocha might be able to pull it off, too… just to make it different?).

if it was my choice though… I’d say thom yorke for sure… played by someone ridiculous like steve zahn… but it’s not really fair to do a movie on a guy still in the range of his musical prime.

So, that said… I’m sticking with Bob Marley…

how bout Sly and the Family Stone!?!

they’re so important in music, and the psychedellicness of it all would awesome. not to mention sly stones fall into complete dependency on drugs.

he used to carry a violin case full of drugs wherever he went!

the soundtrack would be fantastic too.

i’m thinking don cheadle, or as i like to call him, the big cheads. for the lead.

Great musician, tragic story. Seems like it would make a great movie, and i’m sure Jake can pull it off.

not because i think he’s particularly controversial, but because i want to understand why his music reaches so many demographics. Also, it would look awesome if I ever started doing drugs.

I think a Jim Morrison/Doors movie would be interesting. He died so young, but nobody really knows how because there was no autopsy… it would make for quite the story.

Seeing as how I just finished “Just a Modern Rock Story,” the Belle and Sebastian biography, I am thinking that Stuart Murdoch might make an interesting character for a biopic. I think that the same way his characters connect with his listeners, so would his life’s story. He was an athlete, he was a confused youth, he got sick and lost 7 years of his life but it spawned his career and B&S.
Even the B&S story is an interesting one, having become popular without talking to the press for half their career. And then, ten years after their start, they released one of their most critically acclaimed albums, The Life Pursuit.
The film might not draw a large crowd but I think it would be a fantastic addition to the biopic trend.
As for who would play Murdoch, maybe Toby Maguire? Probably an actor I don’t know would do better.
Anyways, Thanks for another thought provoking post, Taylor!

A Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Service biopic would be great. And Ben Gibbard would be played by… Ben Gibbard! I’m not kidding, he has his first acting gig coming up in this John Krasinski(Jim from the Office) directed film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0790627/
It would be perfect if the actual musicians could play themselves, they wouldn’t even have to be good actors since they’re playing themselves. I’m sure Ben Gibbard would consider it because it would definitely boost his acting career, and it seems like he would like to get into acting.

Also an Amy Winehouse biopic would be really fun. I think Helena Bonham Carter(Fight Club, Harry Potter, Sweeney Todd) would be really good. Judging by her acting in Fight Club, she could definitely pull off a successful Amy Winehouse impersonation. Also an Amy Winehouse biopic also has the potential to be successful at the box office since everybody’s been hearing about her. But I think they might want to wait on making a movie about her till a little later, Amy Winehouse is still young and there’s so many exciting things that have yet to happen in her life.
This years Best Actress winner, Marion Cotillard, who won the Oscar by playing the most famous French singer ever, Edith Piaf, I think would be a great choice to play Amy. She already has the experience in playing a famous star on film, and Edith Piaf was also troubled, like Amy Winhouse.
So either Marion Cotillard or Helena Bonham Carter, but I’m kind of leaning towards Marion Cotillard in terms of acting skills.

Death from Above 1979/ MSTRKRFT biopic. There’s enough drama there to cover DFA 1979’s breakup to the formation of MSTRKRFT. Plus fantastic music.

A film about the White Stripes would be pretty cool, all the mystery and the crazy siblings/ex-lovers controversy. Plus Jack White is basically amazing so anything about him would be good. Now who to play them…..Jack White: Heath Ledger would have been good, but sadly not possible, I don’t know it’s hard to pick because there’s no one I can picture playing Jack White except himself; Meg: Zooey Deschanel

Seeing as my first three initial “Woah-those-would-be-awesome-as-a-biopic” Choices were taken, (Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens, and The Doors) I have to think of another, less obvious choice.

After giving it some thought, I definitely think that Lily Allen would be great, if not simply for her personal struggles alone. Her parents didn’t stay together, at age 15 she spent time in rehab after a suicide attempt when a boyfriend broke up with her. She’s had drinking problems. She smokes. She’s a fabulous singer. She had a miscarriage earlier this year. it’s Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll, and you’ll get into the character. Her childhood was “troubled”. She was discovered by her teacher. It’s Biopic Gold. It could only be better if her life ended tragically.. But not anytime soon. I enjoy her music quite a bit, and would prefer her to create more for my listening pleasure :]

  44. Chelsea Hauser said:

Oh, I forgot my actress to portray Lily Allen. In her younger years, I suppose Miranda Cosgrove (Of Nickelodeon Fame) would be pretty good, and for more recent times? Why not have her portray herself? Or maybe Zooey Deschanel. She’s been in a few of those “dark” movies..

I would have to go with Thelonious Monk. I would say that his life was interesting enough especially if you go into how he was married about 5 or 6 times and about his bi-polarity and his songwriting methods and over all demeanor. As for an actor, I might want to go with Denzel Washington or Jamie Foxx (even though he already did Ray)
