Flowers Forever, as far as I can see.

Date March 3, 2008

I finally got the chance to give Flowers Forever a listen over this weekend and count me impressed. Derek Pressnal, who also plays guitar for indie pop tap-dancing group Tilly and the Wall, leads the Omaha, Nebraska-based collective. Derek claims that the he was inspired to make this album after mental breakdown where he had a series of visions and apparently saw the future. So it should be no surprise that this album has it’s fair share of trippy, psychedelic moments. It’s grounded enough though to provide some fantastic pop songs that don’t sound to far attached from their Omaha-dwelling peers.

While the main influence on the album would probably remain 60’s pop, this in no way suggests that Flowers Forever doesn’t rock out. There’s actually quite a few urgent rockers, the kind of urgent rockers with disjointed guitars, piano banging, loud drums, and plenty of organ (see “Black Rosary” for an example). There’s also the cheeky, summertime head-bopper of “Beach Bum” and the Spanish guitar, trumpet, and good old-fashioned call-and-response harmonies of “American Dream”. Get the album through Team Love Records.
