Brits Covering Brits
February 12, 2008

It seems to be quite the trend among the cool Britpop kids to cover each others songs, and I noticed the other day that I have a rather sizable collection of these UK-covering UK-ers. The rules of this mix is both both the coverer and the coveree have to be British (duh), and they have to be Modern (no Beatles/Stones/Kinks covers).
Particularly, I think the Lily Allen covers are bloody brilliant. It takes some talent to make me fancy a sodding Keane song. Kaiser Chiefs cover of Klaxons is also ace. Download them all below. Cheers! (Sorry, about my daft use of Brit slang, I know it’s a bit dodgy.)
MP3 Kaiser Chiefs – Golden Skans (Klaxons Cover)
MP3 Lily Allen – Oh My God (Kaiser Chiefs Cover)
MP3 Amy Winehouse – Valerie (Zutons Cover)
MP3 Arctic Monkeys – You Know I’m No Good (Amy Winehouse Cover)
MP3 Kate Nash – Fluorescent Adolescent (Arctic Monkeys Cover)
MP3 Lily Allen – Naive (Kooks Cover)
MP3 The Magic Numbers – Take Me Out (Franz Ferdinand Cover)
MP3 The Miserable Rich – Over and Over (Hot Chip Cover)
MP3 Arctic Monkeys – Love Machine (Girls Aloud Cover)
MP3 Lily Allen – Everybody’s Changing (Keane Cover)
Have any more Brit covering Brit suggestions that aren’t complete rubbish? Send them my way!

Lily Allen – Mr Blue Sky (ELO)
Tricky – Lovecats (The Cure)
Radiohead – The Headmaster Ritual (The Smiths)
Radiohead – Ceremony (New Order)

although to be honest, the last one is a bit crap!

I blame Jo Whiley and here live lounge for the massive amount of covers around at the moment.
Don’t get me wrong most of them are really cool but some are just terrible

lily allen…cool…are you kidding me.
her and kate nash should have a apocalyptic bitch fight. maybe then i’ll get some peace from their ’shit for brains’ mockney accentage.

Nice selection Simon but most don’t fit because they’re not modern. i didn’t include the magic numbers – franz cover because they’re scottish.

definitely a fan of the monkeys cover of “you know i’m no good.”

Maybe you should change your post title to English artists covering English artists in that case? I know we voted in a nationalist government, but Scotland was still part of the UK last time I turned on the TV.
Other than that, nice post. Haven’t heard the Lily Allen Keane cover… hopefully it’ll make that song bearable!

Indeed, it’s a bit stupid to say that because they’re Scottish they shouldn’t be in this post! Well, really stupid actually but some good covers there anyway.

Sorry last year’s girl, I actually didn’t know the term British included Scotland. Now I feel sheepish… I put up that magic numbers / franz cover for you guys!

Man, I wish The Magic Numbers went a different direction with the cover & made it their own a little more. I forgot “Take Me Out” had that slow part in the beginning, & I totally would’ve digged that cover more if it had more of that vibe they started with to it. I honestly didn’t even check out the other covers ’cause I’m not too big on any of those artists.
But part I swear I just heart an instrumental part of an Andrew Bird track on the episode of Ace of Cakes that’s on TV?

A brilliant selection, I really adore the new noise that Lily Allen brings for songs. Such good, Taylor! (:

there’s an interesting cover of radiohead’s “nice dream” by matthew herbert featuring mara carlyle. i’m not sure exactly matthew herbert’s nationality… i think he’s british (??). it’s sweet.

Fantastic playlist. BBC Radio 1 wins for forcing covers out of artists.
I like Kate Nash, somewhat more than Lily Allen, but they’re mates and big fans of each other, so what does it matter what I think?
Slightly off-topic in that Michael Jackson’s not a Brit:
I really wish the cover of “Beat It” on Charlotte Church’s show with Amy Winehouse hadn’t been so completely destroyed…because it clearly should’ve been amazing.
