Puttin’ on the Ritz
August 15, 2007

Before David Brent or Michael Scott there was a little Chicago band that formed under the name of Office. By the time the band released any music the television show (a big favorite of mine as many of you know) was already huge, but it was worth the wait as the band’s demo CD Q&A got some great buzz on release. Two sites that I frequent, I Guess I’m Floating and The Yellow Stereo, have been on top of these guys from the beginning and after I received A Night at the Ritz this week, I also was completely converted to the stylish group of new wave indie rockers.
Although each song has it’s own charm, there’s a couple standouts on the album. “Wound Up” starts out with a nervous guitar riff that The Cars might have cooked up in the 80’s, but quickly kicks into high gear with the damn infectious chorus of “Let’s go to the beach tonight / with a bottle of wine”. The tone of the song is just perfect, as is the girl-powered background vocals. When the beat drops out and you hear the chorus, bells, and handclaps, you can’t help but sing along. Another highlight is “The Ritz”, the song from which Office got the name for their album. The song hooks you from the beginning with the staccato guitar jolts and guy/girl tradeoff vocals. The falsettoed chorus is awesome and the crazy guitar during the bridge will have you shouting “oh sweet impossible”.

Since I’m already talking Office, might as well remind you that the Season 3 DVD is coming out on September 4th. Can’t wait for the new season!

When I first heard “Wound Up” (on some random girl’s myspace) I couldn’t stop listening to it….so addicting. I really hope these guys make a big splash on the blogs. I think I read somewhere that they’ll be touring with Earlimart too.
