Iron & Wine – Live @ Pitchfork
July 17, 2007

Ever since I got a hold of Iron and Wine’s new and yet-to-be-released album, The Shepherds Dog, it’s been played more than any other album in my collection, so as you can imagine I was pretty psyched to see the songs in a live setting. The host (who overall wasn’t nearly as annoying this year but still had some pretty awful puns) told us that we the band was taking the “iron that makes chicago strong” and the “wine that only gets better with age”. Whatever that was suppose to mean, it translated to the band playing with some of Chicago’s finest musicians, including Leroy Bach (multi-instrumentalist for Wilco during two of their finest albums) on the keys.

Sam Beam came out smiling, and told us that he would be playing some new songs today, much to my delight. He looked thinner and much more like Jesus than I expected. The band was plagued by some some sound problems early on which kindof messed up their otherwise great song, “Sunset Soon Forgotten”. They soon recovered though with some great performances of songs off Shepherds Dog including “Boy With A Coin”, “Lovesong for the Buzzard”, “House By The Sea”, “Peace Beneath The City” and “The Devil Never Sleeps”. The new songs sounded great live; the performances didn’t have the density of the album but the melodies shown through.
After a rollicking performance of “Woman King” the band closed with their set with the absolutely gorgeous “Flightless Bird, American Mouth”. I can’t even begin to describe how beautiful this song was, one of the most transcendent moments I’ve ever had a concert. After a few minutes of huge applause and “one more song” chants, Sam Beam came out and did a solo acoustic version of Radiohead’s “No Surprises” for an encore! (watch the video here) Someone in the crowd shouted “I knew you’d be back, Sam”, which made me laugh at the colloquial type of relationship that the man has with his fans. This was truly one the biggest highlights of the festival for me.

You can get the set at the Iron and Wine message board – Passing Afternoon. I personally would have liked to see The Trapeze Swinger but I was more than happy with what we got.

Toronto, Canada’s quirky popsters Barenaked Ladies were never ones to follow a trend. They were more interested in making someone laugh than being astute and serious.barenaked lady ticketMost of all, a friendship consumed this band and that bond cemented their place in alternative rock. Teenage friends Ed Robertson and Steven Page found themselves laughing at the innocent and child-like term “barenaked lady” while attending a Bob Dylan concert in 1988.
