Andrew Bird songs in Residence Inn ads
June 28, 2007

I was watching the television the other day hoping to see the new Mates of State ad (youtube is failing me right now) and I stumbled upon yet another one of my favorite artists licensing their songs for television. This time it’s Andrew Bird who’s song is featured oddly enough in a Residence Inn commercial. Why oddly enough do you ask? Well, this summer I am working at (wait for it)… Residence Inn.
The commercials feature some of Andrew Bird’s incredible instrumental interludes as background music while trapeze artists, gymnasts, fire breathers, and plate spinners show off some of selling points of Residence Inn (like spacious rooms, full kitchen, etc…). The songs that are played in the ads include: “Banking on a Myth”, “untitled”, “Imitosis” and “Skin, Is My”. Something they don’t mention is that Residence Inn also delivers your dry cleaning, a task which I often find myself doing.
This one, featuring Banking on a Myth (MP3), is my favorite of the ads. Watch it here:
So what does everyone think about indie artists licensing their songs for advertising. Is TV the new radio like Tweedy said? I, for one, think it’s great that artists are getting paid for making great songs and getting a bit more exposure due to these ads. I get really excited when I hear “Bleeding Heart Show” or “Side With The Seeds” blasting out of the TV during the University of Phoenix or VW commercials. The only one I’m slightly disappointed at is the Of Montreal Outback Steakhouse ads as I’m not a big fan of the new “Let’s go Outback tonight” lyrics. But what do I know? Leave your thoughts in the comments…
You can find the rest of those Andrew Bird ads right here.

Saw this yesterday as well…I was all “OH SHIT that’s Andrew Bird”
I don’t mind it as long as it’s not fucking wal-mart, or coca-cola, or something lame like that. I don’t think residence inn causes any harm so why shouldn’t AB cash in a little bit?

I was watching tv with a friend the other day, and the MoS commercial came on. I yelled ‘SHUT UP MUST SEE’, and it was awkwardly hilarious.

I the commerical with ‘Imitosis’ came on the other day, and although I was not previously paying attention, I immediately jumped out of my seat when I heard it come on. I couldn’t believe at first that it was actually his music. I must agree with your point, though. I think it is good for artists to accept opportunities to get more exposure. If people don’t like artists for just doing things such as this, then obviously they don’t truly appreciate their music and probably won’t have any trouble finding another band to love.
I just started my blog about two days ago and I really like your’s (as well as Zoolander :]). Mind if I link you??

of montreal didn’t agree to that really, they got tricked, that’s what i heard i wish i had proof or at least the energy to get proof, but i hope people won’t think any less of them because of the ad

I like hearing Architecture in Helsinki during a sprint ad. It’s better than listening to some bland jingle, even better if it allows them to feed their numerous band members.
And i also read the same thing about Of Montreal not liking the outback steakhouse ad in a pitchfork interview. Something about Kevin Barnes being too depressed to care…

Hiya — glad to see I am not alone in being seduced by the music and the content of the commercials. Does anyone know the name of the performer in the plate spinning commercial?
Thanks-

Thank you.
