Who’s worse? Puddle of Mudd or Staind

Date May 28, 2007

Last time we played this game, we pitted Maroon 5 against Hoobastank and came to a clear conclusion that Hoobastank is much worse. This time it’s two of the worst bands that nu-metal/post-grunge (even the genre names make me shudder) have to offer. While both bands have committed heinous crimes against music-listeners, only one can be the worst. Again, like last time use the comments as a public discussion forum so we can make a collective decision.

First, We have Puddle of Mudd. Perhaps one of the most shameful grunge rip-off bands of all time. They didn’t pretend to be anything but a watered down, crappy version of Nirvana/Pearl Jam even ripping off Corbain’s look and vocal style. Even this wouldn’t be so bad if they hadn’t created “She Hates Me” one of the most painful songs to listen to of all time. It’s completely unimaginative drivel, both lyrically and musically. I think you could get a tumor just listening to it.

We also have Staind, one of the most manufactured, corporate grunge-flavored soft rock bands of all time. The band came up with song after song of whiny, obnoxious metal ballads about how horrible it was before the lead singer was a multi-millionaire, somehow relating to teens who “feel his pain”. Staind’s songs all sound almost exactly the same: boring, contrived, depressing and ripped straight out of a 13 year old’s diary.

So it’s up to you to decide which one is worse. Cast your votes in the comments section, and make sure you have something to back-up your claim…

I hate them both, but Puddle of Mud are much more annoying. I can at least hear a Staind song without feeling violently ill.

Isn’t it “Puddle of Mudd” with 2 ds? Making it even more obnoxious, of course, though I kind of have a soft spot for “She Hates Me,” because of the “la la la la”s. :D

I’m going to have to go with Staind being worse. At least “she hates me” was fun for about five minutes that one summer.

Oh man. That’s a tough one. I hate them both so much.

But, hmm, I’ll have to go with Puddle of Mudd. Sure, their song is catchy, but so is venereal disease.

As for Staind, well, they can just go … away.

dude, it’s puddle of mud hands down. the music is terrible on either hand, but when your band is named after a puddle of mud, any trace of redeeming quality is lost. although attempting to be clever by mispelling a word as your band name is just as reprehensible, at leats they tried to do something clever.

Well, one of them has done a song with Fred Durst, and that automatically makes them suck more than anything that has ever sucked before, with the sole exception being Fred Durst himself.

    Staind is worse.

Stained hands down for having songs that sound completely the same!!!! Puddle of Mudd is at least two points above Stained, which is still on the low end spectrum but still, Stained hands down

I don’t really like either but I’m gonna go with Puddle of Mudd as being worse

  9. Heather said:

Haha I actually kind of like Staind… so Puddle of Mudd is worse. :P

Staind – even when Veronica Mars used them as a punchline in the Joss Whedon episode, it was still painful. I am so, so unhappy to have “It’s Been Awhile” in my head right now.

    Staind. Dreadful music. Yuuuk.
Makes my ears want to jump of a bridge :/

She hates me was Ok. But not good.

When “she hates me” came on the radio, I was like “oh great, a song in which the chorus is poorly edited, genius!” I’ve never heard it not on the radio however. (though it wouldn’t matter) Staind is a band that I never paid much attention to, the mispelling really turns me off, but after reviewing the songs I remembered why. The difference between these songs is substance, meloncholic depressing realization about how long it’s been Vs. a sing along song for people in wisconsin. Sorry Puddle, you had it coming.

Puddle of Mudd, without a doubt, that voice is what is wrong with music, scratch that, America.

Man this was a tough one. For me it came down to whether “Staind – Mudshovel” or “Mudd – Drift and Die” was better, and Mudd wins. Unfortunately they also have the worst lyric ever, in “I love the way you smack my ass”, or whatever that song was. I was really surprised when I found out that the band that made that song managed to pull together a palatable song.

  15. Nathan said:

yuck… I vote for Staind, only becuase that one guy who voted for the Mudd guys said, “a sing along song for people in wisconsin.” I’m from Wisconsin, I resent that statement.

I really have no preference as to which band I would rather bleed my ears to, but I just had to comment on the other comment that drew a reference from staind to veronica mars.

I actually went through a Staind obsessed stage for a bit (4 days?) And then I realised.
    It all sounds the SAME!!

But in all seriousness P.O.M gets my vote.
The worst lyrics. . . ever

  18. eyeris said:

Definitely Staind. All their songs sound the same, and they all go, “I WANNA DIE I WANNA DIE I WANNA DIE I WANNA DIE.” plus the lead singer mumbles so much that I don’t know what they hell the fella is singing about half the time.

  19. Jonathan said:

Staind. Stop whining about your daddy, pussy.

Puddle of Mudd…They are definetely one of the worst I’ve ever heard

I am compiling a list of the top (bottom?) 20 worst bands of all time. Neither of these bands will be on the list because to be an absolute worst, you have to “matter”. ACDC is a sure candidate, as is Aerosmith. Nickelback is on the list for sure. But if we’re just ranking here, both bands are unlistenable, but I MIGHT be able to tune out an hour of Staind. An hour of Puddle of Mudd would surely drive me to eat my own head.

Believe it or not, I live in a city where the mayor officially declared a Puddle of Mudd Day to celebrate their selling-out of a concert. That’s a knock against them.

Then again, Staind, in “It’s Been Awhile,” can’t decide between angst over a lover or a parent. “Can I blame this on my father?” he brings up in the last freaking couplet. Leave the daddy issues in a broken-love song to Prince, Aaron.

    My vote is for Staind.

Puddle of Mudd. I liked one Staind song from the late 90’s (can’t remember the name of the song :P ), compared to the number of songs that I liked from Puddle of Mudd which is zero.

  25. Spike said:

Are you kidding? Staind is the clear choice here…just look how they write their name…

Damn, I enjoy “She Hates Me” and “It’s Been A While” as singalong songs while driving. Of course, both groups are rubbish.

But Richard Cheese never covered Staind, so it must be them that win this head-to-head.

Richard Cheese’s version of “She Hates Me”: http://uploadhut.com/view.php/517657.mp3

His versions of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “Yellow” are on my blog:
