Who’s worse? Hoobastank vs. Maroon 5

Date April 28, 2007

A couple of nights ago me and some friends invented a game where we take two terrible bands and debate which one is worse. They have to be about equal in their horrific nature for their to be any real discussion though, and they should be close to the same genre (John Cougar Mellencamp vs. Lou Bega isn’t going to happen). I decided to move the discussion to an open forum (use the comments) and allow the public to make a collective decision. We may go crazy and have a tournament of losers after a while, who knows.

Anyhow, on to the first match-up: We have Hoobastank, who’s song “The Reason” is unthinkably horrible having possibly worst lyrics of any pop song ever, and a chorus that made me want to give up on music. We also have Maroon 5 who released single after single of wussy pop/rock and with “She Will Be Loved” made us think we’d never want to listen to the sound of a human voice again. But, I’ve been told that Hoobastank’s earlier work wasn’t nearly as awful and Maroon 5’s new stuff might be showing some promise (haven’t heard so can’t weigh in).

So who’s worse? (be prepared to back up your claim) I’ll let you know my opinion soon enough.

I think Hoobastank takes the nod as worst hands down. Maroon 5 seems like a band that is talented enough to play any genre they want – and they choose to play the music they do because they enjoy R&B, the Beatles and Gwen Stefani equally. Hoobastank can’t come close talent-wise.

Agreed. Hoobastank takes the prize hands down. Anyone ever see their horrendous MTV VMA Awards performance? It killed babies. Seriously. Maroon 5 can perform live AND they can create songs like “Sunday Morning” which, in my opinion, may have been one of my favorite songs from 2004 … Plus, their album is supposed to be pretty good and, I kind of like some of their other songs to. So … Hoobastank takes the prize as MUCH worse, in my opinion.

Hoobastank, hands down!I had bought their first CD and was really enjoying, but then when i listened to it after a long pause of around a year, i had one of those “oh my god, this is crap! what was i thinking?” moments. I never really got into Maroon 5 but they do seem like the more talented ones out of the two.

Wow, I guess it’s unanimous so far. I’m going with Hoobastank as well. I mean, just look at their NAME!

Now, Maroon 5 gives me a headache like no other. But “The Reason” makes me physically twitch (no shit), so I think they win.

my favorite is that dude who spliced two nickelback songs to have each come out of a separate channel of your speakers. it actually improves them both. anyway, this isn’t a link to that but i thought you might be interested:

Agreed. Maroon 5 wins for Sunday Morning alone. There’s nothing like ‘driving slow on Sunday Morning’ with that song in the back ground. Plus, in a more superficial note, the singer is kinda sorta hot.

hoobastank vs. nickleback vs. good charlotte.. now, that’s hard.

P.O.D. is worse than either band.

I’ve gotta say, whilst The Reason is awful in the extreme, not only have I never had to repeatedly endure other bad songs of theirs, but I can almost tune it out if I start shouting “NYAHHHHHHHHHHHHH” over it for the duration of the song.

Maroon 5 on the other hand wrote ‘She Will Be Loved’, which my sister loves. As if that wasn’t bad enough, MTV loved it too, and for a while there played both it and This Love and another song I can’t remember the name of, but sounded exactly the same as This Love. Yes, I like Sunday Morning, but still. I’ve only ever been forced to listen to one Hoobastank song, whereas I’ve suffered through much Maroon 5 crap, so the latter win.

Unless we would be going by band name, in which case Hoobastank win against every band, ever.

    hoobastank wins for worst song
the reason is so terrible i cant even listen to it without stopping halfway through, whereas maroon 5 is okay leaning towards completely sucky. but even the name!
    hoobastank?

I would just like to suggest that while both bands are terrible, the boy-band-like devotion to maroon 5 is way more annoying than having to endure one of their three minute songs. That is why I shift my vote more that direction.

    Hoobastank, def.

Hoobastank hands down, but Nickleback crushes all on the terrible scale

Hoobastank hands down, primarily becasue I was forced to endure a 8 day trip to mexico with not one but two people who loved “the reason”. Also on a music video level I would much rather watch a maroon 5 video repeditively then “the reason” which looked like and sounded like a combination of nails on a chalk board and a dying cow.

I’m going to buck the trend here and vote for Maroon 5 – simply because that lead singer is obviously enamored with himself. And his voice is unbelievably whiny.

I’m sorry I’m going to really buck the trend and say that I loved!! “The Reason,” yes I’m a girl and yes I did subject a poor ex to this song on repeat for about 6 months. Maybe that’s why he’s an ex?

However, other than that song I can’t stand Hoobastank, they win despite Maroon 5’s overly obnoxious lead singer, who is beyond impressed with himself.

    I think Hoobastank is worse.

I’ve never heard anything by Hoobastank that I liked. I think Maroon 5, as terrible as they might be…and in no way, original, creative or astounding in any way…can write the occasional catchy song.

And before they were Maroon 5, they were Kara’s Flowers…and though very raw and rough…I think they weren’t all that bad (at least from what I remember O.o).

I think Adam Levine’s voice better than the Hoobastank singer as well.

hoobastank is awful. maroon 5 is the shit. i wish they were playing sasquatch.

    HOOBASTANK.
When’s the last time we’ve heard of them, again?
The Reason? That was in 2004, I think…
    It IS 2007 — who’s still around?

Being a musician I would not critisize based on names but more of specific criticizm and track records,

maroon 5 has a list of well known songs from; She will be loved, This love, Sunday morning, Harder to breathe, Woman, & hoobastank has like 1 which is The reason; and Adam levine is a great singer when put beside Hoobastank’s lead singer, James Valentine & Jesse Carmichael sets the pace on Guitars, bass and Keyboard and far outdo Hoobastank, Hoobastank only have a more decent drummer…

so Hoobastank is worse, and maroon 5 Rocks
