STAR
March 12, 2007

The other day, I was talking about shoegazing with a friend and was having a hard time thinking of ways to describe what it sounds like. STAR has made my life so much easier because now I can just hand him their album. Not to say that shoegaze is what defines them or that it’s is their only influence, but the album Devastator pretty much sums up what I think the shoegaze should sound like – heavily distorted fuzz-laden guitars mixed with strong melodies and sweet sounding vocals. STAR has taken this format and injected it with refreshing dream pop, creating some of the most promising and beautiful new music of the year so far.
The first song you should hear from the band is actually one of the last on the CD. “Liars in Love” is fantastic in every sense, it’s both completely sublime and unapologetically catchy. It’s a track I wanted to replay right after it finished. “Switchblade Heart” is another song that caught my ear, and it showcases Shannon Roberts angelic vocals and a very unique drumming pattern. Each song on the album have something to offer, it’s amazing how consistentally awesome it is considering it’s the band’s first full-length. I very highly recommend!

Oh my, thank you so much for highlighting Star; they bring me right back to the Cocteau Twins and early 90s – something a lot of new bands aren’t capable of doing these days, not to say that they aren’t good but…you know what i mean.
With much love from Singapore,
thanks!
