Weary-eyed and forlorn…

Date February 6, 2007

I have a pretty stressful week with school and work picking up, but there’s a few things I have on the agenda today that I need to get out there. First off, it is release day and the release that you should be paying the most attention to is Bloc Party’s, A Weekend in the City (the post title comes from the song “Waiting for the 7.18″). I was a bit unsure of the album at first, but it’s been a huge grower for me almost surpassing the fantastic Silent Alarm (but not quite). The best part is the 1-2-3 punch of Kreuzberg/I Still Remember/Sunday near the end of the album. There’s more emotion and energy contained in those three songs than most full albums.

Secondobly, for those lucky enough to be a Mac-user, there’s a new program that could totally change the way you read music blogs. It’s called Peel (download it here) and it allows you to subscribe to MP3 blogs and it streams all the songs onto your computer. You can also download the songs and send them to your itunes with a click in the mouse. It keeps the MP3’s in one tab and the Web site in another so you can still read the page as your listening. This is really helpful if you want to give a song a listen so you don’t fill up your iTunes library with stuff you don’t necessarily like. Go to getpeel.com and try out the public beta.

Lastly, Derek at Good Weather For Airstrikes has been working extremely hard on his year end posts for 2006 and they’re so big that he just finished them up now. There’s nearly 100 songs to download in his Top 50 Tracks post, and you can download or stream all of the videos in his Top 50 Videos post. I spent about an hour watching most of the videos in his post, and he made some great selections, tons of stuff I’d never seen before. Go check both of these posts out, you could probably spend the whole day rest of the day there.

You also may want to check out The Colour’s new release “Between Earth and Sky” which came out today. You can stream the album here: http://www.thecolour.tv/ecard/

They’re a much better live band. But the album’s not bad. But seriously, when you see them live, you immediately think Mick Jagger and the rest of the Stones.

Christ. Between Peel and those programs which convert digital radio directly into discreet mp3s and Steve Jobs today calling for a complete abandonment of DRM the music industry is going to have a hell of a job figuring out how to safely protect its revenue stream.
