Au Revoir Simone

Date January 11, 2007

Au Revoir Simone is exactly the kind of charming female-fronted synthpop group that I’ve fallen head over heels for again and again. But the difference here is that Au Revoir Simone has three girls singing and something they call “triple keyboard action” so does that make them three times ahead of the rest? Quite possibly! Their new album is called The Bird of Music and it comes out in the UK in January and (hopefully) a U.S. release date will be soon to follow.

The band seemed to have mastered the art of layering keyboards over each other in interesting and beautiful ways. Ear candy may be a good way to describe their sound. This isn’t to take away from their songwriting which is in top form throughout every song. The melodies are superb and the lyrics aren’t nearly as cheesy/generic as they could be getting away with. “Dark Halls” is my favorite on the album, there’s so much great stuff going on that it’s hard to know where to begin but 80’s style keyboard that comes in at :35 seconds is so perfect. “Sad Song is another huge highlight, and I imagine it will be the first single. They add organ and trumpet sounds to this song with fantastic results. This is very high on the recommendation scale, so make sure to give both of these songs a listen.

[...] HOW I HEARD ABOUT THEM: I’ve known Annie and Erika since the DoP dayz back in the early 2000s. LATEST RELEASE: The Bird of Music [Release date: Self-release on Feb 26, 2007 on their Our Secret Record Company label–BUY] SONG LISTENED TO: “Fallen Snow” WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE: Whimsical, light, airy, and definitely girly. If they every toured with Joanna Newsom, indie boys around the world would have exploding eargasms, and their little hearts would burst out of their sweater vests onto the floor, causing them all to fall dead immediately. The pretty ladies start a MASSIVE international tour starting Feb 13th and don’t come home until June 15th at Webster Hall. 1 to 5 RATING: 4 OTHER BLOGS THAT HAVE TALKED ABOUT THEM: Gorilla vs. Bear (with a link to the “Teenagers” remix of “Fallen Snow”), Music for Kids Who Can’t Read Good LISTEN TO MORE: “Sad Song” on the Myspace [...]
