Field Music
January 8, 2007

Other than the blog drama, I’ve had a great week (It’s hard not to when you’re on a semi-private island in the Bahamas). One of the albums that I had on repeat this week was Field Music’s sophomore album, Tones of Town. Although every song is great in it’s own way, the best songs on the album are sprinkled with piano and make great (but not overdone) use of strings. Field Music’s musical style is very syncopated and rhythmic, kind of like what Spoon might sound like if they were a britpop band (especially on Sit Tight). Tones of Town is at times very Beatles-influenced, while others show they can convincingly add country/western (A House is not a Home) or prog-rock to their sound.
“Closer at Hand” is my favorite, the chorus is very singable and is only eclipsed by the bridge of the song which puts the strings at the front of the mix. “Give It Lose It Take It”, the first track, is perhaps the most immediate song on the album and also the one that jumps genres the most favoring 70’s prog rock in a big way. They do everything with style though, and a the result is a catchy and fun album that’ll turn heads once it’s released this February.

Yay, I’m glad that they’re finally reaching over to American soil! I’ve loved Field Music for about 3 years now.
Did their collection of B-Sides (Write Your Own History) make it stateside? It’s by far their best work IMO.
