Those Darlins
August 13, 2009

With country music straying more and more into the land of radio-friendly pop music, it’s great to have a band out there like Murfreesboro, Tennessee’s Those Darlins who are going the complete opposite direction. The three girls + one guy are making quite the name for themselves with their rowdy, garage punk-inspired alt-country that falls somewhere in between a backwoods hoe-down and The Ramones (although strutting around in short skirts and high-heeled boots also can’t hurt). While it’s their live shows that have gotten them the most buzz (especially their raucous sets at SXSW and Bonnaroo), it’s their self-titled debut album that’s turned me into a convert.
The album kicks off with one of it’s most thrilling tracks, “Red Light Love”. The song really exemplifies the wild, free-spirited attitude the girls exhibit with its buzzsaw guitar and driving beat while the walking bass line keeps the song firmly rooted in country. The vocal performance on the song, which includes all three ladies in harmony, is riveting and the chorus is catchy as hell. Also check out “The Whole Damn Thing” which is probably the best song I’ve ever heard about getting drunk and eating chicken.
