The Mae Shi / Signals – Live @ Pitchfork

Date August 5, 2009

Sunday at Pitchfork Festival started out with by far one of the oddest shows of the fest. The Mae Shi, as you might have read, were/are in the process of splitting into two bands (Mae Shi and Signals) and the guys that were on stage were the three that are becoming Signals. They ended up playing a mixture of remixed Mae Shi songs and new Signals songs. Weird. The good news is that the band (whatever you want to call them) did bring doses of jittery punk energy that was pretty  entertaining although their sound was all over the place.

The Mae Signals kept the show interesting by roaming into the crowd, bringing fans on stage to sing along during “Run To Your Grave” and, at one point, throwing a giant parachute in the audience (the kind used in Jr. High P.E. classes everywhere). A couple of lively Chicago rappers, who at one point begged Pitchfork to review their album, even if they got a 4.2, were also on stage for a couple songs and helped keep the energy level at a scorching high. A sloppy first/last performance but pretty fun nonetheless.
