Sara Lov covers Arcade Fire, Beck, Silversun Pickups
March 7, 2009

I’ve been hearing about Sara Lov, a singer/songwriter formerly of the band Devics, for a while now but never actually gave her a listen until her album arrived in the mail this week. Her music is dark, melancholic, and haunting and is matched perfectly with her smokey vocals. I’m reminded of the whimsical folk-pop sounds of bands like the The Softies and The Innocence Mission by her music.
In addition to her lovely solo material, she does some great covers, adapting each song to her own unique style. The best of her covers is Arcade Fire’s epic “My Body is a Cage” (most recently seen in that great Benjamin Button TV spot). Sara gives the song a melodramatic, sultry touch replacing the pipe organ with minimalistic piano and strings. Beck’s electro-rock jam “Timebomb” is turned into jaunty indie pop number under Sara’s direction. She’s also in the midst of an all-request video covers series, because she just loves covers that much. The latest is Silversun Pickup’s “Kissing Families” with help from the band’s lead singer, Brian Aubert.
