The “Stuff White People Like” Mix

I was introduced by Celeste to Stuff White People Like a couple weeks back (I know, I’m a bit behind on this), and I’ve been reading the site ever since. So when I was in Barnes and Noble the other day and saw the “Stuff White People Like” book on the shelf, I had to get it. Ever since I’ve been amazed at how accurately Christian Landers pinpoints and lampoons white people (like myself)’s own personal “unique” taste.
I will say that the “stuff” in the book isn’t representative of all white people, just those cultural elites, 20-30 year old, urbanite/hipster types. For example, NASCAR and Dane Cook is not included (the author goes so far as to call the people that like them “the wrong kind of white people”).
Some of the stuff included in the book like Wes Anderson Movies, Apple Products, Music Festivals, and “Arrested Development” hits very close to home for me, but his examination of a white person’s iPod is by far the most accurate. So, I’m basing this playlist off of Lander’s suggestions. White People Represent!*
MP3 Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
White people love their Montreal-scene orchestral indie rock. According to the book, every white person (noting the definition above) with no exceptions has Funeral on their iPod.
MP3 Velvet Underground – I’m Waiting For The Man
Velvet Underground and Nico is pretty much the godfather of white-people-indie-rock.
MP3 A Tribe Called Quest – Award Tour
SWPL states that A Tribe Called Quest is the most beloved hip hop group for white people. I’d say Wu-Tang, but that’s just me.
MP3 Bob Dylan – 4th Time Around
Show me a white person that doesn’t have at least some appreciation for Bob Dylan. I agree with the book that Blonde on Blonde is his best.
The book says it best: “A white woman plays the harp and has difficult lyrics. An instant classic.”
What white person doesn’t love to rock out and play air guitar while yelling “Debaser”?
MP3 Neutral Milk Hotel – Holland 1945
I recently talked to white record store clerk at the local college campus in Peoria, IL and she said that In The Aeroplane Over The Sea was their best selling album.
I wouldn’t say the Beatles are limited to white people, but maybe they love them most? I think “Penny Lane” is one of the best (and white-est) Beatles songs.
MP3 Belle & Sebastian – We Rule The School
Landers says that most B&S fans will claim Tigermilk as their favorite. I personally say If You’re Feelin’ Sinister is tops, but I do love this song.
*Not in the racist way, though

I am glad you have found “Stuff White People Like” It is such a great blog and the funnest things are the ones that hit close to home. The mix was great thanks.

I… am not white. But I love most of the songs on that play list… I am surprised to see this post here. I am fairly confident that you are not racist, Taylor, but I simply don’t get the “white” thing. Really, I must not get it. I thought our generation was over that, even if it is in light humor or whatever this is… I am thoroughly confused.

I can see how this post would be confusing if you hadn’t heard of the “stuff white people like” blog/book.
It’s basically just some playful stereotyping of white hipster-types and their “unique” tastes (coffee, organic foods, recycling, Netflix, etc).
The mix is based entirely off of the book’s section called “what is on every white person’s iPod” (the tracks aren’t just limited to white people, it’s just part of the stereotype he’s creating).

This band from Dallas is starting to really get the attention of people. I thought you might want to check it out and treat your ears to it. I especially like the songs “All of My Life”, “Dream”, and “Love”. Enjoy!

White males in american jails and prisons are number one victims of rape and violence. If your white and a male don’t break the law in america or you will pay a terrible price. Just read “No way out” and move to western europe
